In 1990...the military powers that be,
decided it was time to send me back overseas, so I was sent off to
Araxos Greece, near Patras. Upon arrival, the commander was
surprised to see me, as apparently they were informed that my
predecessor was to be the last Disaster Preparedness Specialist they
would have...well, surprise, surprise!! All of the information
related to my job had been shipped off to Italy as the main base in
Athens Greece, Hellinikon, was in the process of closing down permanently. |
Instead of shipping me back off to a base that could use
me in my so-called "critical AFSC", senior USAF officials only offered
me the opportunity to spend twice as long at Hellinikon
(still solo/unaccompanied) and assist in that base's closure driving a
fork lift and general gopher duties...or I could stay at Araxos, working
for the First Sergeant as a Dormitory Manager, Taxi Driver, and gopher.
I stayed where I was left, stunned at my limited options and waste! |
